White Screen of Death: Common Causes and How to Diagnose It

One of the most common calls I receive starts the same way: “my website went blank”. A white screen — technically a PHP fatal error with display turned off — means the server hit an error before it could render the page. The good news is that the cause is usually simple to find once you know where to look.

The usual suspects

  • A plugin or theme conflict — very common on WordPress sites. A recent update or a new plugin can clash with existing code.
  • A PHP error in custom code — a missing semicolon, a typo in a function name, or an incompatibility with a newer PHP version.
  • A memory limit being hit — a script that grows too large halts without output.
  • A partial file upload — an interrupted update can leave a file truncated or corrupted.
  • A database connection failure — the site can’t retrieve its content and shows nothing.

Diagnosing in a calm order

  1. Check the error log first. Most hosts expose PHP error logs in cPanel or your hosting dashboard. The exact error message will usually point straight at the file and line responsible.
  2. Enable a development-friendly display temporarily. On a test copy, switch display_errors on to surface fatal errors while you work.
  3. Deactivate plugins and themes logically. Rename the plugins folder or switch to a default theme via the database or file manager to isolate the conflict.
  4. Re-upload or restore the suspect file. If an update failed partway, restoring the last known-good copy often fixes it.
  5. Rule out the database. Verify the site can connect, and check the database error log for failed queries.
  6. An important habit

Backups. A recent, tested backup turns a white-screen emergency into a ten-minute fix. Keep automated backups, and always take a manual backup before major updates or edits.

If your site is showing a blank page right now, the fastest route is to get me the error log — it usually reveals the answer immediately. You can reach me through the contact page.
