Good SEO is less about tricks and more about making your website clear, fast and genuinely useful. The on-page basics below are the foundation every small business website should have in place. They do not guarantee rankings — nothing does — but they remove the technical friction that quietly holds good sites back.
1. One clear page for each topic
Each important service or topic deserves its own dedicated page with a focused title and description. Thin, overlapping pages confuse search engines and dilute your relevance.
2. Honest, human-friendly titles and descriptions
Write unique page titles (around 50–60 characters) and meta descriptions that summarise the page for a human reader. If it reads naturally, it is usually right.
3. A logical heading structure
Use exactly one h1 per page, then organise sections with h2 and h3. Think of it as an outline: if you can read the headings alone and understand the page, you have done it right.
4. Descriptive URLs
Prefer short, readable URLs (/services/web-design) over query strings and numbers. They are easier for humans to trust and for search engines to classify.
5. Image optimisation with alt text
Compress images so they load quickly, and add descriptive alt text that explains what the image shows. Alt text is accessibility first, SEO second.
6. Internal links that make sense
Link between your own pages where a visitor would genuinely benefit — a services page pointing to related case studies, for example. Internal links help crawlers discover content and help users navigate.
7. Speed is part of SEO
Core Web Vitals (loading, interactivity, visual stability) are ranking signals. A fast site on a reliable host, with compressed images and efficient code, outperforms a slow one almost every time.
8. Submit your sitemap
Generate an XML sitemap and submit it in Google Search Console, along with a clear robots.txt. Then use Search Console to monitor how your pages are actually being discovered.
